Korean Skincare Routine Order: The 5 Steps Explained
The right order for your Korean skincare routine
Most people who feel let down by Korean skincare aren't using bad products.
They're using good products in the wrong order.
It sounds like a small thing. It isn't. Put your moisturiser on before your serum and the serum can't reach your skin — you've just spent $30 on something that's sitting on top of a wall you built yourself.
Here's the order, and more importantly, why it is that way.
The rule behind the order
Thinnest to thickest.
That's it. That's the whole principle.
Each product is lighter than the one after it. Water-based things go first because they sink in fast. Oil-based and creamy things go last because they form a seal — and anything you apply after that seal can't get through.
Once you know that, the five steps make sense on their own.
Step 1 — Oil cleanser
What it does: dissolves sunscreen, makeup and the oil your skin produced during the day.
Why it's first: oil dissolves oil. Water doesn't. Your sunscreen is designed to survive water — that's the point of it — so washing with a foaming cleanser alone leaves most of it sitting there.
The bit people get wrong: use it on dry hands and a dry face. Massage for a full minute, then add water and it turns milky. If your face is wet when you start, you've diluted it before it's done anything.
Step 2 — Foam or gel cleanser
What it does: washes away the dissolved oil, plus sweat and everyday grime.
Why it's second: this is the other half of "double cleansing". The first cleanser breaks things down, the second carries them away.
The bit people get wrong: lukewarm water, not hot. Hot water strips your skin barrier and leaves you tight and red — which then makes everything after it sting.
Step 3 — Toner
What it does: adds the first real layer of hydration and preps your skin to absorb what's next.
Why it's third: Korean toners aren't the astringent ones you might remember from the 90s. They're hydrating. Damp skin absorbs the next steps far better than dry skin, so this one quietly makes everything after it work harder.
The bit people get wrong: pat it in with your hands. Don't wipe it off with a cotton pad — you're removing the thing you just paid for.
Step 4 — Serum
What it does: the actual treatment. This is the step doing the heavy lifting on your specific concern — dullness, dark spots, dehydration, texture.
Why it's fourth: serums are concentrated and expensive. You want them going onto prepped, damp skin with nothing in the way, and sealed in by what comes after.
The bit people get wrong: one serum at a time. Layering three because they each sounded good is how people end up irritated and blaming the products.
Step 5 — Moisturiser
What it does: seals everything underneath and stops the water evaporating off your skin.
Why it's last: it's the lid. Anything applied after it has to fight through.
The bit people get wrong: oily skin still needs this step. Skip it and your skin produces more oil to compensate. Use a gel texture rather than a cream.
One extra step, mornings only
Sunscreen. After moisturiser, before makeup.
Every brightening thing you did in the other five steps gets undone without it. In Australia especially — our UV index is brutal compared to most of the world, and it doesn't care whether it's cloudy.
So what does this actually look like?
Morning: foam cleanser → toner → serum → moisturiser → sunscreen
Night: oil cleanser → foam cleanser → toner → serum → moisturiser
Same five products. The oil cleanser sits out in the morning because you haven't got a day's worth of sunscreen to remove.
The honest bit
You don't need ten steps. You don't need a shelf of products. Five, in the right order, used consistently, will do more than twenty used randomly.
The hard part isn't the routine. It's working out which five products belong together — which ingredients clash, which textures layer properly, which ones are worth the money.
That's the part we've done for you.
